Bill Cramer – Featured Artist

Artist’s Bio:

Bill Cramer is renowned for his striking oil paintings of the American West. Raised in the West, Bill has always had a passion for exploring nature and creating art. As an avid rock climber, he spent much of his youth enjoying the more vertical aspects of the landscape. Eventually settling in Arizona, he discovered the joys and challenges of plein air painting. Bill’s Impressionistic Realism style uses bold brushwork and colors to capture the vibrancy and beauty of the natural world. He aims to balance the actual scene with his reaction to it, conveying an experience rather than a replication. Bill’s work often reflects the subtle elements of the landscape, such as the warmth of sun-baked sandstone or the scent of sagebrush. www.billcramerstudio.com

In Zion, an artist doesn’t have to search too hard for compositions or inspiration. However, this view looking downriver from inside Zion Canyon at sunset has always intrigued me. As the sun dips toward the horizon, the warm sunlit ridges and deep shadowed walls reveal the complex topography of the towering canyon walls, while the autumn cottonwoods explode with color. The Virgin River calmly reflects it all. For a moment, the park itself is transformed into a canvas of captivating beauty. This location also holds many memories for me of my past efforts painting for the park and of the good times spent running around with family and friends. The setting sun and autumn season remind me that our brief time here is special beyond measure; only Zion is forever.

One of my favorite walks in Zion is along the Virgin River from Canyon Junction to the Temple of Sinawava. I hike early and return in the late afternoon to catch the most dramatic light. My painting, based on a pastel study and a photo taken below the Temple, captures the golden backlight on cottonwoods and the contrast between the river’s cool tones and the warm hues of trees and cliffs. Studio painting lets me relive that fleeting moment, evoking the river’s scent, the canyon wren’s song, and the cooling evening breeze.

Where Angels Tread

Intentionally creating fine art oil paintings imbued with the transformational grace of beauty is a delight for me. Experiencing the splendor of our world’s natural spaces and loving on the land with a brush in my hand is magic. It evokes a dialogue with divinity where I begin to understand my place in it. Like a lovely remembering of wellbeing that flows from Mother Earth through me and out in the paint to bless and benefit all who will receive… That you allow that, and more is my desire with “Where Angels Tread.”

In January 2023, I finally witnessed Zion National Park’s beauty in the wintertime. During the autumn in Zion Canyon, the Datura Wrightii is often overshadowed by the canyon’s grandeur. This plant, also known as Moonflower, Angel’s Trumpet or Jimson Weed, is a powerful symbol with medicinal and hallucinogenic properties. Its cultural and historical significance is deep among the people native to the land, though many overlook it in favor of the dramatic scenery. I respect its understated beauty and wisdom, a reminder to appreciate the often-missed details of our surroundings.

Like an electric charge, color surges through the peaks and valleys of Zion’s landscape. Bright sunlight ignites the liquid surface on the canyon floor. The trees seem to applaud in silent reverence. Pastel is my medium of choice for the way it physically traps color and light in the tiny particles of pigment that cling to the sanded paper surface.

The remarkable Great Arch of Zion sits majestically at the top of Pine Creek Canyon. It is in constant view for those driving up the switchbacks to the mile-long tunnel. On the east side of the tunnel visitors can take a short but exciting hike to the spectacular canyon overlook. Those completing the hike will be standing on the rim above this arch. Bridge Mountain throws a strong shadow across the face of the arch as each day progresses from dawn to dusk. It is a joy to paint.

This piece is based upon a scene near Eagle Crag trailhead. I was drawn to the juxtaposition of alpenglow on the cliffs of sandstone against the piñons and junipers in the shadow of late day. The road for me helps the composition balance the strong diagonals of the left and right hillsides, bringing the eye back to the sunlit show in the background. It was one of the most stunning views I’ve experienced as an artist… grateful to have been there in that moment.

In early November, I obtained a wilderness permit and ventured nine miles through the rugged Left Fork of North Creek to paint The Subway, navigating the icy stream, steep scrambling and hiking.  Entering the inverted keyhole of The Subway felt like a portal to an otherworldly realm of unique geology and striking color contrasts. I painted plein air studies in solitude, capturing the interplay of cool blue sky light and warm, glowing canyon reflections. These studies and memories inspired my studio painting, reflecting both the scene’s visual beauty and the emotions of that profound experience.

Part of the excitement of painting in Zion is exploring the area for new vantage points. During a sizzling summer day, I found myself in search of a fresh perspective and headed towards a shady spot along the Virgin River. Looking up, this intriguing view presented itself. My hope is to share the joyful feeling I experienced the day I painted, “Peaceful Place.”

I was inspired to paint this scene from a foggy morning one day during the last Zion Plein Air event before the pandemic. Such incredible beauty with the sun coming through and hitting the massive wall of stone. I invented the rest with the riders to give some scale to the piece.
