Creating Careers for Concrete to Canyons Alumni

Funding Needed: $35,897

Following Zion’s proud tradition of training public lands stewards through internship experiences, the park seeks to pilot a new program. The first cohort of 5th grade students in the Concrete to Canyons program are now enrolled in Las Vegas high schools. Building upon already-established relationships with these school districts, the education team at Zion will recruit two Concrete to Canyons alumni to spend a summer season in the park as interns. Under the guidance of park leaders, they will participate as youth mentors for the 150 children in the 2019 Concrete to Canyons program.

In the future, the Zion educational team hopes to set aside a seasonal position specifically for Concrete to Canyons interns to apply for. This pilot project can create a continuum of experiences for urban Las Vegas youth, who have their first exposure to Zion as elementary-aged students, who return to Zion as high school interns and are given the chance to join Zion’s team as staff members, advocates and leaders of the National Park ideal.
