POETRY IN THE PARK

This exciting program, now in its NINTH year, is made possible by a partnership between Utah State Poetry Society and Zion National Park Forever Project. It is partially funded by grants from the Utah State Division of Arts and Museums, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“A Celebration of Sound and Sense” taught by award-winning author/poet,  Shanan Ballam from Utah State University’s English Dept..

Because of ill health Jim Barton won’t be teaching for us this year, but we are excited to have SHANAN BALLAM of Utah State University’s English Department joining us in our three days of poetry activities in Southern Utah in early spring. An award winning poet, exciting teacher of poetry and creative writing, Shanan will be presenting some fun ideas on how to improve our poetry skills. She has chosen the theme for her presentations as A CELEBRATION OF SOUND AND SENSE.

SCHEDULE

FRIDAY-March 2, 2018 at Zion Park Lodge  1 Zion Canyon Scenic Dr, Springdale, UT from 9 am to 4 pm

8:45-9:00 am Finalize Registration, Mix and Mingle at Conference Room in Zion Park Lodge.

9-10:45 Workshop Part I – Generating Sound Sequences and Gathering Materials, instructions for the nature walk-and lunch time writing.

11 am-noon (Optional) Nature Walk with Zion Forever Project Naturalist. We’ll explore the Grotto’s handicap accessible path to view the wonders of this beautiful area along the Virgin River. For those not wishing to take the Nature Walk, they can use this time to write poetry and remain in the Zion Park Lodge.

Noon-1pm LUNCH-Bring a sack lunch or enjoy eating at Zion Park Lodge’s Redrock Grill, visiting and individual writing time.

1-2:45  pm Workshop Part II – Blending the Sensible and the Surprising-using the materials we have generated and gathered during the workshop and our experiences in the park to write poems that will surprise and delight writers and audiences alike.

3-4 pm Sharing Circle-share poems written.

Optional Activities:

Thursday night March 1st, 2018, FREE Z-Arts Lecture by  Shanan at Canyon community Center in Springdale at 7 pm. Inexpensive lodging available in Springdale, come join us before the crowds and shuttles begin. Note there is some construction in Springdale city so come early.

FEE: US $55.00 NO DISCOUNTS; BE SURE TO REGISTER EARLY SO THAT YOU MAY RECEIVE YOUR FREE PARK ENTRY PASS IN A TIMELY MANNER. REGISTRATION DEADLINE FEB 15TH. ALSO, ADD 30 MINUTES MINIMUM TO DRIVE COMING FROM THE DIRECTION OF HURRICANE DUE TO ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
